Retirement Planning

At Horner Insurance, LLCwe are here to help you achieve your retirement goals.

Building a Secure Retirement

Social Security benefits form the foundation of most retirement plans—but they’re just one part. To maintain your lifestyle in retirement, most people will need about 70% of their pre-retirement income. Social Security typically covers about 40%, so the rest should come from savings, investments, or pensions.

Estimating Your Benefits

Your benefits are based on your lifetime earnings. Years with low or no income can reduce your future payouts. When you claim also matters—starting at 62 means reduced monthly checks, while waiting beyond full retirement age increases your benefit.

Use the Social Security Retirement Estimator for a personalized look at your potential payments.

Special Considerations

Self-Employed? You must report earnings over $400 on IRS Schedule SE to qualify for benefits.

Government Employees? Your pension may reduce Social Security benefits through the Windfall Elimination Provision or Government Pension Offset.

Working Abroad? You may owe taxes in both countries unless a coverage agreement is in place. Visit the SSA’s International page for details.

Don't Forget Medicare

As you approach 65, it’s essential to plan for healthcare:

  • Part A (Hospital Insurance): Usually premium-free and starts automatically if you're receiving Social Security.
  • Part B (Medical Insurance): Optional, with monthly premiums.
  • Part D (Prescription Drug Coverage): Also optional, with financial assistance available for those who qualify.
  • If you're not receiving Social Security, be sure to sign up for Medicare as your 65th birthday approaches to avoid penalties.

Already Receiving Benefits?

If you’re on disability benefits, they’ll convert to retirement benefits at full retirement age. If you’re receiving survivors benefits and qualify for your own higher benefit, you may be able to switch at age 62 or later—but you’ll receive only the higher of the two.
